One Community’s Climate Action

Can one community really do anything about climate change? I was skeptical. Then I read about how people in Attleboro, Massachusetts, started a small project in their community to tackle one local part of this huge global issue. They turned an abandoned baseball diamond behind Attleboro High School into a densely planted pocket forest designed to help absorb stormwater and reduce flooding after major storms.
A pocket forest, sometimes called a mini-forest, is a small, densely planted area of native trees and shrubs. The approach most often associated with this kind of project was developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. His method involves planting many native species close together so they grow quickly, form a layered ecosystem, and create environmental benefits in a relatively small space.
Why did Attleboro undertake this project? Local residents became concerned about flooding and other environmental pressures linked to climate change. Severe storm and flood damage in 2023 helped get people’s attention and pushed them to think more seriously about how their own community handled water, land, and green space. This project was a practical local response to a real environmental challenge and showed what community action could look like in practice.
So what happened in Attleboro? In order to create more green space and a flood buffer, the community transformed the old baseball diamond into a pocket forest. Volunteers planted about 550 native trees and shrubs close together, turning an underused and neglected space into a community and ecological asset.

Many community members enthusiastically participated in the planting, including students from Attleboro High School. The students learned by example from local community leaders about improving their community. “This will cool the area that it surrounds and sponge the water that comes in from flooding,” said Jamie Young, a junior at Clark University who helped plant the mini-forest.
Why does this project matter? The practical benefits are clear. A pocket forest can help absorb rainfall and reduce erosion. Adding trees and shrubs can also help cool the surrounding area, which matters in a place that has dealt with serious flooding. The plants create habitat for insects and small animals, increasing biodiversity. Just as important, the space can serve as an educational and community resource, helping inspire people in the area and showing what local environmental action can look like.
What can other changemakers learn from this? First, small projects can still address serious problems. Second, local environmental action can be both practical and educational. Third, you can learn a great deal by joining a project you care about even if you are not its founder. And finally, meaningful change often starts with a specific place and a concrete need.
You do not need to solve everything in order to do something. One good next step is to look around your own neighborhood and notice what needs doing. Talk to people. Talk to your friends. Do a quick internet scan. Are there underused spaces, local environmental problems, or school and community sites in your area that might be improved by a practical idea? It might not be a pocket forest. It could be a small park, a community garden, or another shared green space.
The Attleboro pocket forest is an example of how authentic local action takes shape. Their example reminds us that even modest local projects can teach us how change begins.
